Is Your Broadband Speed What You Expect?

Filed under: Telco, University Of Technology, Web Of Tools — @ 11:13 am

Most users of a broadband supplier will claim that their connection speed is usually the biggest part of the supply. However many a broadband suppliers will not furnish customers with tools to trial their speed. But there are many another websites out there that will allow you to verify your internet speed. When trying your broadband speed it’s fundamental to get a website that is oriented to your nation, there is no point doing a trial using a tester placed in France when you are trying to do a broadband speed test in India. A test will present your upload speed as well as your download speed. Upload means speed between your PC and the Internet, so if you send off a lot of files then upload is essential to you. Download speed is the speed at which you can get files from the internet to your computer. Download speed is usually a lot speedier than upload and this is normal. Most users are a great deal more interested in their download speed rather than their upload speed as people ordinarily pass very much more time downloading. Once you have found out the speed of your broadband service what do you do if you aren’t satisfied? The most evident option is to call up your supplier and let them know that you know your speed is not acceptable. You should also do things at home to ensure that your service is operating optimally. Always make sure that all built-in phone cabling is in quality shape and do not use poor quality extension lines. See to it your computer anti-spyware software package is operational. When performing a broadband speed trial forever determine that you aren’t carrying out any other actions which may be making the supply to be utilised such as downloading email or downloading movies.

VoIP - The Exception That Proves the Rule

Indeed corporate accounts are often constrained against adopting a new voice platform by large, long-term investments in a legacy PBX. Meanwhile the SME is being offered low risk, low disruption, high-value propositions from service providers such as Skype, Devil7 and Evoxus. Furthermore, recent advances in the IP-PBX and gateway space promise huge opportunity for the reseller focused on the SME market.

VegaStream’s Vega 50 6×4 is the ultimate configurable gateway targeted at the SME market. This product lets the reseller deliver a wide range of IP/TDM gateway options supporting analog exchange lines and end points as well as Basic Rate ISDN in a single, compact form factor. Driven by VegaStream’s award winning configuration and dial planner software, this gateway provides a simple, one stop solution to migrate and integrate the typical amalgam of lines acquired by the growing SME to a converged VoIP solution.

In an associated move, VegaStream has also become corporate sponsor of SIPFoundry, the not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the development of open source software for SIP-based communications on industry standard platforms. SIPFoundry is following the Linux/Red Hat model with Pingtel adopting the role of Red Hat as the company to bring SIPFoundry output to market as fully supported and commercialised product. Pingtel’s current IP-PBX offering comes to market up at up to 70% less cost than equivalent solutions from traditional telecoms hardware vendors. They look on track to meet their goal “to bring PC economics to the VoIP industry.”

For once, it looks like the SME may have an edge over the corporates!

Anti-Piracy Laws Enforcement Difficult Over Mobile Broadband

Filed under: Consumer Planet, Telco, University Of Technology — @ 6:20 am

Anti-piracy measures of the government are already bearing the brunt of heated protests from different groups. These stringent measures are being promoted in response to appeals in particular to control illegal downloads and piracy which are eating into the profits of the entertainment industry.

Nevertheless, whatever be the measures provided for on paper by the government, implementing them effectively is another story altogether. Concerns about whether these measures can really be deployed to curb the issue in question are being raised by officials from ZDNet UK, a technology and business news website.

According to ZDNet, it will be a near impossible thing to track internet usage accurately when it comes to mobile broadband connection. They are different from home broadband connections in that there is no one unique IP address for each user. Home broadband users can be easily tracked with this distinct IP address and penalised for illegal activity. However, a mobile user will be clustered with several others in a common IP address, which will make it impossible for authorities to identify the culprit among the group.

The Digital Economy Bill attempts to ensure that copyright laws are not infringed. It aims to do this by identifying users who download and share copyright material without permission. When such offender is identified, he/ she will first be sent warning letters. If the activity continues even after this, the bill provides for temporary suspension of internet account.

These measures have been considered too harsh by both industry players and the public who have been protesting against the bill right from day one. A petition against the bill has also been forwarded to Downing Street with tens of thousands of signatures.

If you have not yet joined the ranks of mobile internet users, there are a number of points to consider when choosing a mobile broadband option. Take a look at all the plans offered by the various operators, I found some excellent laptop deals at Mobile Broadband Genie. You will be given all the information you need about each supplier on their comparative table of UK broadband providers to help guide you through the decision process.

Is a VOIP Calling Plan Right for Your Home?

If you watch TV read magazines, or drive through and cities with billboards chances are you’ve come across advertisements for VOIP calling plans. Many of these advertisements try to sell their services on how much less expensive their services are compared to traditional calling plans. They also talk about quality and clarity of calls. You’ve probably wondered how much of this is true and how much is hype.

VOIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is probably one of the most revolutionary advances in the telecommunications industry. It allows you to talk to another person across the globe using digital network connection exactly the same as way you receive email or visit websites. Because you voice is converted into a digital signal it can be sent across the street, across the country, or across the globe for exactly the same cost. For VOIP calls the concept of long distance doesn’t exist.

VOIP calling packages come in two flavors, bulk rate pricing and unlimited calling. Bulk rate pricing allows you to have a monthly allotment of minutes to call who ever you want (just like your cell phone service). If you go over your monthly allotment you will have overage charges. Unlimited calling is exactly just like it sounds you have no limit on the amount of calls you can make. Unlimited calling plans range from $35 to $90 per month depending on the VOIP service provider and the additional features included with your plan. Unless you are making a lot of calls or the unlimited calling plan is very inexpensive bulk rate pricing is usually a better option.

Just like cellular phones VOIP service providers allow you to “port” or move switch your existing phone number into their service. This is really convenient as you won’t have to notify your friends and family you’ve changed your number. Currently there is no legislation that VOIP providers have to allow you to port your number out if you are unhappy or want to change providers. Some of them will, others will charge you a fee, and some will refuse to accommodate your request, be sure to check this before you sign any contracts.

If the VOIP company you are using “piggybacks” on your existing broadband cable connection your phone service is dependant on your cable connection. If your cable connection goes out or you drop your cable company your VOIP phone service won’t work. Additionally if you lose power in your house unless you have a backup generator your phone won’t work.

Lastly many VOIP service providers don’t interface well with emergency services (911). On traditional phone lines your address information is automatically sent when you make a call, this isn’t true for VOIP. © Copyright VOIPTelephoneSystem.org, All Rights Reserved.

Motorrad Navigator II GPS Navigation System

Owners of BMW motorcycles have a new technology available to them to provide up to the minute directions and navigation throughout all of Europe. BMW’s latest GPS unit for their motorcycles is a huge step up from their previous model. This model features an upgraded memory chip, up to 2 GB from 512 MB. The model also comes with a road map covering all of Eastern Europe installed right out of the box. This is a great feature because prior to this model you would have to take the unit to your pc and download the appropriate maps onto the unit. With this model you simple have to mount the unit to your motorcycle and attach the battery cable and you are ready to take off on the road.

Riders will find the new touch screen a vast improvement over the previous model and it has been retuned for easier use with gloved hands. The unit has been rated for use in snow and in rain, and against extreme heat and cold. The units increased memory and processors allow for virtually instantaneous updates of information and position. As with the previous model it still provides the rider with elapsed time, estimated time to destination, current speed, average speed and top speed. This models positioning is extremely accurate as it pulls information from twelve different satellites when coordinating your position. Most GPS units only use the information of four satellites and this gives the BMW model a greater advantage at calculating your exact position on the globe.

As for drivers or riders of non-BMW bikes, this unit can be used with any vehicle or motorcycle and will require minimal mounting and wiring. For an automobile it comes equipped with a cigarette lighter plug and can be mounted fairly easily to most vehicles. Pedestrians can also use this unit with its battery powered option. This product is available at all BMW dealerships and online at the BMW website.

Commissioner Reding Offers Quick Solutions for Better Broadband Future

Filed under: Consumer Planet, Telco, University Of Technology — @ 6:28 am

Giving some telecom service providers a rude shock, Viviane Reding has hinted that she might stick with her role as the Commissioner of the European Union for the third time in a row.

She is currently promoting the need to free the spectrum for mobile broadband use and is also trying to rush the switch to digital TV before its proposed schedule. She was the one who helped bring down the cost of data roaming in the EU and she looks ready to march ahead in pursuit of other things.

Estimating the worth of the analogue TV spectrum, to be used for wireless broadband use, at somewhere between 150bn and 200bn, Reding has also added that this move would eventually lead up to a benefit of a whopping 50bn if the member states acted quickly. Therefore, to maximize the benefit from ‘digital dividend’, she has asked all the governments of the EU to start the process now. She is hoping that this will help in bringing about a digital revolution a lot earlier than the predicted 2012 deadline.

At the Lisbon Council in Brussels, Reding spoke out about how she hoped to empower Europe with a good broadband facility and guarantee its broadband users more choices in broadband wireless services for a better broadcast and high speed internet.

But she also expressed that this motive could only be achieved if there was a more harmonized and useful method of using the radio spectrum

VoIP: A New Era?

Well let’s begin with what VoIP is. In short, it allows you to make phone calls over the internet using your broadband connection, but has many benefits:

- You can make phone calls from virtually anywhere in the world to anywhere else using your computer.

- Depending on the speed of your connection, you are able to make several calls at the same time.

- If you move home, you are able to keep your same number, even if you move from one side of the world to the other. As you do not have an actual land line, but a converter that has a number assigned, as long as keep the converter with you, you can plug it into any broadband connection and immediately utilize your usual number for making and receiving calls.

Another benefit of VoIP, which many will find useful, and be an attractive feature for many businesses, is the ability to connect to your office phone, whether it be from a hotel or from home. This will enable company personnel to work out of the office, but still have access to all of the office phone system features.

VoIP can also be very cost effective, especially when making long-distance calls. This factor has meant that telephone service providers have to compete with VoIP, in turn ensuring pricing is much more competitive.

At the beginning, the voice quality for those using VoIP was not as good as with a traditional phone line. However the continual technological advancements have meant that the difference in quality is now not as apparent.

So how does it work?

To begin with your voice is converted into bytes so that it can be compressed, split it into packets, and transmitted over the internet. These packets, which contain a collection of information, including the origin, timestamp, and intended destination of the packet, is then converted at the receivers end so that your voice is recognised.

There are many that are already abandoning existing telephone networks and solely using VoIP. For a wealth of information on VoIP take a look at http://www.voip-serviceproviders.info.

Justin Brown owns and runs http://www.voip-serviceproviders.info where visitors can read more information on VoIP service providers and businesses can find resources and products to get up to speed with VoIP. He also runs an automotive site where you can sell or buy and used cars online.

Get a “Virtual Phone Number” - Eliminate Long Distance Charges with VoIP Phone Service

There’s a revolution brewing in the telephone industry. But it’s not the recent demise of AT&T or the failure of Worldcom. It’s a new, yet proven, technology that lets you talk with friends, family and loved ones over the Internet.

It’s called VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or broadband phone, and it lets you use your ordinary home or office telephone to dial and talk to anyone using the Internet as your “channel” of communication. Instead of dialing through the Bell System copper wires, you make calls through your DSL or cable Internet access provider. No microphones or headsets. Just use your existing telephone to talk throughout North America and the world.

This new technology not only saves you 50 to 60 percent on your monthly phone bill. It also provides a host of services the phone company cannot. One of these - a “virtual phone number” — can eliminate long distance charges to friends and family who want to call you. Here’s how it works.

When you order your VoIP phone service you can also order a second phone number in a distant city. For example, if you live in Philadelphia you’re in the 215 area code. And, if you have relatives in Los Angeles, you can order a virtual number in area code 818 (Los Angeles). Then, when a family member in LA wants to call you, they simply dial the 818 phone number, which is a local call for them. Amazingly enough, your phone rings in area 215. Your family gets to talk to you for the cost of a local call: for free.

Virtual numbers are great for kids going away to college. Rick and Patti live in Cleveland and have a son going to college at Kennesaw State University, near Atlanta. They can order a VoIP phone number with the Cleveland area code for the home phone, and get an Atlanta area virtual number. Then, when their son wants to call home, he makes a local Atlanta call and the phone rings at Mom and Dad’s house, 700 miles away.

Of course VoIP phone service also provides toll free numbers - usually at less than two cents per minute - giving you yet another way to make it easy for friends and family to stay in touch.

Get virtual! Join the millions of people jumping on the VoIP bandwagon and start enjoying the rich features and accessibility you can get through broadband phone service.
