Is New MSN Search More Precise? Just Ask Google

Filed under: Search Engine Optimization Infos — @ 2:37 am

MSN finally unleashed its new search technology to the world on Monday. The official announcement coming from Bill Gates introduced the New MSN Search engine, ending with a personal invitation to visit www.msn.com and type in your question.

Here at WebAdvantage.net, we consider ourselves to be veteran internet searchers, often able to easily find the information we’re after. Considering we spend all day every day online, we should be. Even so, we rarely venture to type search queries in the form of questions on search engines, except for the handful of times we visit AskJeeves.

The thought of being invited to type in a question at MSN’s new search engine intrigued us. We decided to follow the trail of links to learn more about what they were offering. We were, at first, impressed with the pages singing the praises of the new “more precise, more powerful” MSN Search service. We were impressed, that is, until around page five of the “learn more” series of MSN’s site pages. That’s when we started to get tired of clicking “next.”

Turns out there were ten pages devoted to learning more about what MSN Search offers (which perhaps could have been explained less painfully). But at WebAdvantage.net, we’re dedicated online marketing professionals, so we hung in there.

We were informed that MSN’s search results would now be drawn from their encyclopedia, MSN Encarta, enabling it to function effectively as a reference tool for finding things like definitions, conversions, geographic capitals and historical events. And that it could also now perform news and image searches and would draw music related results from its own MSN Music, placing artist information and sample song clips at the top of any music related search results.

MSN was also offering search functions for your own desktop or Outlook email (if you’re so inclined to download those). Throughout the “learn more” pages, they gave search examples. The first search examples given were in the form of questions; questions with specific answers like “Who is LeBron James?” and “What is the mass of Jupiter?”

MSN Search, they said, would give you more control over your searches, with filters to refine and a “near me” button to instantly localize results. Sounded good and well, but we were still more intrigued with that initial invitation to “visit and type in your question.”

So we tried it. We visited http://search.msn.com and decided to use one of their examples, typing in the question, “What is the mass of Jupiter?” To our shock and pleasure, there it was–an answer, right at the top and separated from the actual web results. It said, “Answer: Jupiter: mass: 318 Earth Masses.”

Inquisitive and competitive by nature, we wondered what would happen if we typed in the very same question at Google. So we asked Google, “What is the mass of Jupiter?” Amazingly enough, Google spat out an answer right at the top of their results page as well. But Google’s answer was, “mass of Jupiter = 8987 10 to the 27th power kilograms.” Now, we’re Internet marketing experts, not rocket scientists, but it appeared that Google actually provided the more precise answer.

Good humored sports that we are, we went promptly back to MSN Search to give it another try. Since their first result at least taught us that Jupiter’s mass is 318 times that of the Earth’s mass, we typed in the next logical question, “What is the mass of the Earth?,” thinking that we could then arrive at our own conclusion by multiplying that answer by 318 to arrive at the answer Google had already provided.

Unfortunately, MSN’s answer to “What is the mass of the Earth?” was “Answer: World: mass: 1 Earth masses”

You’d think that the folks over at MSN would have tested their examples on MSN Search as well as testing the same queries on other major competitors before selecting them for the final cut. Well, maybe not.

We then spent the better part of the afternoon periodically asking MSN Search and Google questions to see how they’d fare. If you’re ever bored, try asking them, “How hot is the sun?”, “How many eggs are in a bakers dozen?” or “How far is it from New York to Utah?”

Here’s what we learned from our afternoon of follies.

1. If you’re looking for encyclopedia-type answers to questions like “What is a marsupial?” ask MSN Search (or visit encyclopedia.com or Britannica.com)

2. If youre looking for a black and white photo of daisies, use MSN Search because the image search is nicely arranged and you can filter results by size as well as by color or black and white.

3. If youre looking for results near me, stick with Googles automatically localized results by including the city and state in your query.

4. If youre looking for the most precise answer, perhaps you should stick with Google (at least for now).

Australian Free Articles Directory

Filed under: Search Engine Optimization Infos — @ 3:48 pm

One of the most pivotal facets of any online marketing campaign is how do I deliver the goods in the major search engines. How do I get my site to rank easily in Google, Microsoft’s Live or Yahoo?

One of the most central facets in doing substantially better in the search engines (assuming the fundamentals suchlike brilliant content are already in place) is producing links aimed at your website. You can do this a few different ways, some viewed positively by the search engines and some not so favorably.

A sure styles, that the search engine engineers think is adequate is link building with articles.

Basically this calls for writing a honest article, preferably around something from your business, and then publishing it to a free article directory.

You really shouldn’t underestimate the seriousness of link building. If there is one signal that takes precedence to the search engines, by and large, it is links. Sure, there are alot of other signals, such as the domain name, but you are misguided if you believe you are going to be listed well, and easily discovered, if you do not realise any links.

Building links with articles is easy. It is something the search engines say is okay. And, it adds value to the web, by providing valuable content that might be interesting or useful to users. The real question is what are you waiting for?

Google Bombing and Choice between Inbound Links and Keyword Optimization

Filed under: Search Engine Optimization Infos — @ 2:45 am

The complexity of search engines like google gets confirmed with the diverse suggestions given by SEO specialists and the search results themselves.

The gap between theory and practice gets widened as we see that “keyword optimization” is not everything….after all. The answer lies in having as many inbound links as possible and..let’s face it…nobody can deny the rationale behind a higher rank for a larger number of inbound links with proper tags to follow suit.

Google’s algorithm is perfectly done and the search results only reflect the complexity of the whole exercise…and google is where it is….at No 1.

Can the search engine be blamed for “google bombing” and what can the search engine do about it ? Can the No. 1 search engine do anything in the first place ? These questions crop up when a seemingly harmless search for “miserable failure” in the search engine gives an output which you or I won’t ever imagine will find a No 1 position at the No 1 search engine.

The result: http://www.whitehouse.gov/president/gwbbio.html When you point your browser to this page, it will lead to the United States President, George Bush’s biography and I presume that this webpage is obviously not “keyword optimized” for “miserable failure”.

This is the result of google bombing and at the same time, it is the result of a large number of inbound links to this webpage with “miserable failure” as the subject tag.

Let’s look at it both ways. The No 1 search engine obviously has sound logic as is evident from the fact that a large number of websites link to a particular webpage only if it is popular. It is a different matter that popularity can sometimes fall flat on the face as is refelected in this example.

The second way we can look at the validity of large number of inbound links is that the search results may not be what one expects….. after all. Can somebody do anything about it ? Is it possible to differentiate between “positive popularity” and “negative popularity” in terms of search engine rankings ? Can a group of web users or a small community target a website with “negative keywords” ? Can a well-knit community shape the rankings of a website ?

Is a sound linking strategy the holy grail for higher search engine rankings ? Has “keyword optimization” run it’s course ? Will the search engines alter their algorithm to reflect “positive keywords” and “negative keywords” ?

These are the million dollar questions …and we are waiting for the answers…Mr. Google or should we ask the SEO experts for the answers ?

The internet has allowed a number of individuals to start their own businesses. Internet businesses are a fun way for individuals or groups to make a profit online. There are number of ways to increase the profits of a website; however, search engine optimization is likely the most profitable one.

Search engine optimization, commonly referred to as SEO, is a collection of tools or methods used to improve the search engine ranking of a website. Say an individual is searching for stomachache relief for toddlers, they will key that phrase in a search engine website that will provide them with a list of numerous websites containing information on stomachache relief for toddlers. Most internet users will likely click on the websites that appear in the top ten and many times they don’t even get past the third page of the search results. For this reason, proper search engine optimization is important in moving a website up the ranking scale.

A large number of techniques are used to increase a websites ranking. One of the most common ways to do this is by using SEO articles. Search engine articles are also commonly referred to as keyword or keyword phrase articles. These articles will contain information relevant to the website that they are on. The number of keywords used will often help to improve the website’s search engine ranking. Although producing keyword articles may seem like fairly simple task, they are time consuming and additional searching engine optimization techniques also may need to be used. For this reason many website owners hire outside individuals or companies to increase their search engine rankings

Finding affordable search engine optimization is possible. There are a large number of individuals or groups who advertise their services on the internet. One of the best ways to find a quality, yet affordable search engine optimization company is by using an internet search engine! One of the most common mistakes made by individuals who may be seeking affordable search engine optimization over the internet is not fully examining a wide number of individuals or companies. Just as if you were shopping for any other type of merchandise, you should fully inspect the services offered by each search engine optimization company and determine if their fees are affordable.

Affordable search engine optimization is available for individuals who need assistance in improving the ranking og their company website. Each affordable search engine optimization company will have their own pricing guidelines; however, many tend to accomplish the same goal. The goal of increasing website ranking is an effective way to increase profits, especially if a website is selling a product or service. In addition to individuals who use their online website to sell, affordable search engine optimization is also used by individuals who run a private or personal website. Many internet users or bloggers use keyword articles and other effective search engine optimization techniques to improve their rankings. Although they may not be selling a product or service, they may make a profit from affiliate linking.

Affordable search engine optimization help is out there, you just need to find the right one to successfully improve your website.

How To Syndicate Your Content

Filed under: Search Engine Optimization Infos — @ 6:51 pm

Note: In order to preserve the proper format for the HTML code snippet in this article, copy and paste the article into Notepad, then copy and paste it from Notepad into your HTML web page.

—————————–

Do you have regularly updating content that you would like to make available to other websites? Perhaps a computer tip of the day, a daily recipe, or even a daily cartoon?

Do you want to give your website more exposure, boost sales, enhance your search engine rankings, or grow your newsletter subscriber list?

A fast and easy way to accomplish all of these goals is by using content syndication. Content syndication is the simple process of making a block of content (which usually changes on a regular basis) available for other webmasters to use on their websites.

Sound complicated? Well, it isn’t!

There are several ways to syndicate your content, but the easiest way by far is to use a simple IFRAME (Inline Frame). Here is the HTML code for creating your own content syndication IFRAME:

<br /> <iframe src="http://www.yoursite.com/content.html"<br /> width="150" height="300" frameborder="1"<br /> scrolling="no"></iframe><br />Content courtesy of<br /> <a href="http://www.yoursite.com" rel="nofollow">http://www.yoursite.com</a><br />

To display your content on his/her web page, all the other webmaster has to do is copy and paste this code into his/her web page in the place where he/she wants your content to be displayed.

Instructions:

1 - Replace http://www.yoursite.com/content.html with the URL of the page on your website that you wish to syndicate. Make sure this page contains only the content itself along with any related HTML code such as bolding, colors, etc. Do not include headers, footers, navigation, etc.

2 - The width and height attributes set the size of the IFRAME in pixels. In the example above, the content would fit in the left-hand navigation column of most websites.

You can change these attributes to any size you wish, but keep in mind that the IFRAME must be large enough to accommodate your content. Also keep in mind that the smaller your syndicated content, the easier it will be to find webmasters who are willing to use it.

3 - The frameborder setting determines whether your content will be displayed inside a box. The default setting is yes (1). If you change this setting to 0, there will be no border, hence no box.

4 - Setting the scrolling attribute to “yes” will add scrollbars to the IFRAME. This is useful if you wish to syndicate a long article while keeping the IFRAME small.

5 - Change the URL in “Content courtesy of http://www.yoursite.com” to your website’s URL. This way visitors can click to visit your website if they found your content useful.

I recommend making this line mandatory as a condition for using your content. It will generate targeted traffic to your website and provide a valuable backlink for search engine ranking purposes.

6 - Important: Copy and paste the code above into NotePad, then into your HTML editor. This helps ensure proper formatting in your web page.

7 - Let other webmasters know you have content available for them to place on their websites. You can place a link on your site that says: “Syndicate our content!” or “Like this content? Place it on your website!”

You can also submit your content to the many “free content” websites that are found on the web. Just do a Google search for “free content”.

That’s all there is to syndicating your content on other websites! Have fun!

When to NOT Hire a SEO and Why

Filed under: Search Engine Optimization Infos — @ 7:40 am

When you get an e-mail from SEO Company with content similar to this:

“We submit your site on X00.000 search engines and directories…”

Stay far away from companies which offer you to submit your site on thousands of directories and search engines.

Why?

What they do is: they use submission software and advanced scripts and they submit your site to different guest books, local search engines, search engines in other languages, post your URL in comments in different Blogs, FFA etc…You will not have any benefit from this.

FFA stands for Free For All, pages which are designed to carry a designated amount of links on each page. Have in mind that when comes to link popularity relevancy counts and links form this pages will not going to help you much. Add to this that FFA pages have very limited life span, you will get the picture.

When some SEO company claims that they can guarantee #1 on Google

Why?

No one can guarantee #1 on any Search Engine! (Except the owner of course)

I can guarantee you first place in the search results in my Greek Business Directory, since I am the owner, but there is no chance that ethical and honest SEO company will give you such a guarantee in real life.

Even the biggest companies in SEO industry do not give such a guarantee. There are companies who claim that if they don’t achieve specific number of top 10 positions, you get your money back. Take even this with great caution, and be sure to read their guarantee 2 times, including the small letters on the bottom (if there are any). Many of them will attempt to propose you non competitive phrases, which will give you no traffic and therefore you will have no benefit from this.

When SEO Company offers you to get paid on base on delivered traffic

(Though THEIR domain)

Why?

Many SEO Companies offer to the prospective client’s deals on base on delivered traffic. This traffic to be measured easily, they propose new domain, or sub domain to be created, optimized and to deliver traffic though this domain. Be sure to ask which property will be that domain or sub domain.

If SEO Company told you that domain will be their property, your site will not be optimized. Here is what will follow: SEO Company will register domain name on THEIR name, and will optimize that domain for your keywords. They will redirect all traffic from that domain to your site.

You will be forced to pay monthly maintenance to that company and if you decide to stop their services, they will redirect their traffic to some other company in same industry. Keywords which worked well for you, will work well for your competitors too.

Fair and honest company might offer similar deal because of many reasons, but the domain from which the visitors will come will be YOURS, so if you want to change SEO Company, you will have the traffic directed to your site until the new company takes over, and your investment (optimized domain and the traffic) will remain your property.

In case that SEO Company doesn’t want to disclose the techniques which will use to rank high your website.

Why?

Legal and ethical SEO Company will give you very clear idea what they intent to do with your site, and will give you detailed plan of activities. You have to know that some SEO Companies use techniques forbidden by search engines and your site may get banned from the search engines because of this.

For example if your SEO company use thousands automatically created so called doorway pages, which are full of your keywords only and are useless to the visitors, your site might get banned because of this.

So be sure to ask your SEO Company what they intent to do, and which techniques they plan to use. Good SEO Company is always ready to educate their client to some level.

When SEO Company claim that you will see the results within 1 months

Why?

In this case, don’t walk away. Run!

If your site is brand new, it might take up to 3 months to get listed on major search engines. To get some results even in less competitive results, you should count that 4-6 months is the timeframe where you can expect to see first results. Note that if your website has 5-10 pages only, you will need much more content that this. SEO Company will have to add much new pages to your site, and that is time consuming task.

So, if the SEO Company claims that you will be on the top within a month, they have PPC (Pay per Click) in their mind, and that have nothing with Search Engine Optimization.

The 7 Points of Do-It-Yourself SEO

Filed under: Search Engine Optimization Infos — @ 3:48 pm

Ever felt intimidated at the convoluted, jargon-ridden information about Internet marketing for small businesses available on the Net? Ever been horrified by the huge fees the experts charge, putting search engine optimization beyond your own means? Ever thought: What exactly is search engine optimization anyway, and can I do it myself?

The answer is: Yes, you can! The basics of search engine optimisation in applied web marketing are simple. It’s all to do with the keyword content of your text copy, and can be summarised in seven points.

1. Register a good domain name which reflects what your site is about. Even if you are an established business, don’t register www.FredJones.com if you make widgets. Rather, you want to register something like www.BestWidgets.com because that would inspire confidence in people looking for quality widgets who would not necessarily have heard of Fred Jones the widget-maker.

2. Name your page URLs based on reasons similar to the above for your web promotion, except now you can be more specific. Search engines like to know what your page is about. Name a page after a product (BigYellowWidgets.htm) or a service or action (Buy-Widgets-by-Post.htm) on one of the sales pages.

3. The text in the title tag is crucial in letting search engines know what each page is about. Put your important keywords in your title tags, using both the singular and plural versions (people will search for both) and make these tags different and specific for each page. For example, “Widgets and After Sales Widget Services”. Whatever you do, don’t call the home page “Index”, but treat it almost as a mini-description.

4. The other tags (at the top of the html page) between the two “HEAD” tags are not as important as the title tag, but the description tag is still used by some search engines in displaying what you would like web users to see when they scroll down a page of search results. Some search engines don’t use the description tag at all; others, like Google, sometimes use part of it together with part of the main body text surrounding prominent keywords on your page. So you may as well treat the description tag seriously; make it brief (about 25 to 30 words) and as comprehensive as possible in the short space allowed. Make sure you have your popular keywords included within your description tag. The ALT tag is used for a very short description of an image or graphic file, and is what is displayed if you allow your mouse pointer to hover above a graphic. These days it is not considered important for search engines. The COMMENT tag is never displayed on the body page, and is used by coders and designers as an instruction or reminder to themselves about what that section of html coding should be doing; in the past, some webmasters in their quest for website promotion and search engine ranking used to stuff keywords in the comments tags, but now it is generally acknowledged that the main search engines pay little or no attention to these.

5. Keyword density. Each search engine has its own preference as to how many times a keyword phrase appears on the page in order to signify the relevance of that keyword phrase (in other words, in order to help the search engine understand what the page is about). Around 5 to 8 per cent is a rough guide as to the optimal level. Don’t overdo it, otherwise it will be seen as spam or keyword-stuffing. Also use your keywords in the headings tags H1 and H2. There is an H3 tag as well, but it is doubtful whether search engines bother with that, as it is perceived as less prominent on the page, therefore less relevant to what the page is about.

6. Don’t forget good linking in your website marketing. Search engines will judge the importance of your web pages to some extent on the number and quality of incoming links from other sites. Ask other webmasters with sites on similar themes to yours for a link, in exchange for a link back. These sites should not be in competition with yours, but should be similarly themed. You may occasionally be asked by other webmasters if they can link to your site. If this is so then have a look at their site; make sure that their site is relevant, that it has at least some Page Rank, and that it just “feels” good, and has no nasty surprises like redirects or unexpected popups. You don’t want to be associated with a “bad neighborhood”!

7. Make sure that important keywords are included in the anchor text within inbound links from other sites. This is crucial to search engines when they try to figure out the relevance and importance of your pages. The inbound link from the other site should take the form of something like this (I’m using normal brackets instead of angle brackets so as not to use compromising html): (A HREF=”http://www.Yoursite.com”)your important keywords included here(/A). You should definitely avoid something like (A HREF=”http://www.Yoursite.com”)click here(/A), which tells search engines nothing except that your site is about “click here”. Be careful!
