Low Pair Play

Any pocket pair in online poker is a made hand, and often the best starting hand pre-flop. However low pocket poker online pairs can be problematic. Low pairs consist of cards 2-2 through 6-6. These poker cards all rank lower than half of the deck, and in all probability the flop with bring some higher cards that beat your low pair. When you do get dealt a low pair, playing them from early position is risky since you can easily get raised. If the table tends toward tight play with little pre-flop raising, then entering the pot is probably worth the risk. Low pairs are playable from late position too when no raise comes out ahead of you. The flop is crucial to your low pair. If the third card to complete a set does not materialize, then most likely your pair is beat and you will have to fold it. Check from early position and fold to any bet. From late position, you can check if no bet comes out first, or based on what you have observed about your proponents and board texture, raise the pot with your small pair. It’s always possible the flop missed any remaining players and your low pair is actually the best hand. Just keep in mind that your hand is weak and easily beat by anyone who calls.
